Welcome to North Florida!

North Florida is what the natives boast of as "The Other Florida" or the "Real Florida--the one with four seasons."  Beautiful beaches, rich forests, abundant wildlife, clean water, pristine rivers, deep draft waterways, good schools and GREAT people all coming together provide a quality of life that is second to none.

Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, and home of the "Seminoles," lies within an hour's drive of most listed properties.  Although Tallahassee is becoming a metropolitan area, it still retains its aura of elegance and "Old South" charm.  One of its striking features is the canopy roads, natural tunnels of towering trees that cover and cool the roads.  In the spring, dogwoods burst forth from a forest of azaleas -- "Tallahassee's answer to Washington's Cherry Blossoms".  This area of the Panhandle is rich in history, too.  Literally down the street from the Capitol archaeologists have found what they believe to be the sixteenth century campsite of Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto.

Leaving Tallahassee for Wakulla and Franklin counties, travel down Highway 319 along heavily forested roadways.  You may wish to stop in Wakulla Springs, where the largest and deepest spring in the world pumps 600,000 gallons per minute of crystal clear, fresh waterThe absolute clarity of the water is overwhelming and, from a glass-bottomed boat, a penny descends the full 185 feet in plain view.  Nearby lay a couple of Mastodon bones.  If you do not mind the presence of alligators on the opposite shore, you may enjoy a dip in the cool waters that remain 70-72 degrees year 'round.

In Wakulla Springs, the fifty-year-old restaurant and lodge is quaintly styled after a Spanish adobe mission.  Guests enjoy quiet conversation.  The elaborate marble lobby is dominated by a massive stone fireplace and awe-inspiring painted cypress ceiling  reminiscent of da Vinci.  Enjoy a game of checkers on the marble topped table or gaze in wonder at "Old Joe," an eleven foot alligator that was murdered at age 200 by an unknown poacher in 1966.

Enjoy nature at its best on trail walks or river cruises amid an atmosphere that is positively primal.  And, don't leave without a visit to the fabulous, old-fashioned ice cream parlor and gift shop to pick up artifacts and a hot fudge sundae.  Dining is a pleasure in the beautiful dining room or on the front porch where parties are catered and forever fondly remembered weddings performed.  Try the house specialty - navy bean soup - and the delicious homemade desserts.  Then continue your journey to the coast.

Shell Point Beach has several unique advantages over other Gulf Coast communities.  It has the largest mooring port between Tampa and Panama City - over 400 pleasure crafts are docked in the two marinas and along the deep draft waterways.  Fishing is enjoyed year 'round.  Trout school in the grass flats off Live Oak Island; mullet are caught by hook, cast, or seine nets in the canals and along the beach; redfish have averaged 17-25 pounds and seem to favor the canals around the docks during the winter; grouper and snapper are caught in the rocks off shore and crab baskets are filled with blue crab and stone crab.  Scallops and oysters can be scooped up during season on the grass flats or along the many bars in Oyster Bay.  For those not into fishing, the beach is great for sun bathing and the shallow water is an added protection when swimming with children.  Wind surfing and sailing are year round pleasures.
